‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Is Like ‘‘I Love Lucy’ on Acid,’ Says Danny DeVito

Kaitlin Olson isn’t the only It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star getting her I Love Lucy flowers

During a recent sitdown with fellow Batman baddie Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito revealed just how much “freedom” he has while playing Frank Reynolds, likening the It’s Always Sunny set to that of the classic 1950s television series. “You  I Love Lucy?” DeVito asked Farrell, Penguin to Penguin, during the pair’s Variety “Actors on Actors” interview. “It’s like I Love Lucy on acid. You can do anything you want.”

Citing the ability to “improvise and screw around,” which has led to such inspired moments like the Paddy’s Pub crew being thrown “off a building,” or in his case, stripping down to “come out of a couch naked” during Season Six’s “A Very Sunny Christmas,” DeVito praised the cast’s openness to new ideas. “You can pitch to these guys,” he said of his “great” co-stars before detailing just how seriously The Gang takes their fun.

“It’s reverence,” DeVito continued. “You care about it, you go to work, you have a good time.”

And again, the end result is like I Love Lucy — if I Love Lucy were trippin’ balls, of course.
